Lijjat Papad : A success story in Indian Women empowerment!

Lijjat Papad : A success story in Indian Women empowerment!

Seven ordinary women took an extraordinary step when they picked up their belans and decided to roll papads with a start-up capital of Rs.80 in 1959 Mumbai. They never imagined that their courageous step would yield a unicorn organization with over Rs. 800 crores in annual revenues today.

Within 3 months of beginning, they had 25 women enrolled rolling papads and now employ over 43,000 women. As a principle, the women decided that this would be a cooperative society where each member of the society would be accountable for an equal profit and loss sharing. Soon, the founders were on their way to multiple cities in India to show other women how to use the perfect flavor for a high quality incredible tasting Lijjat Papad!

After its tremendous success with papads, Lijjat also diversified in other consumer goods such as detergent, masala, atta amongst others. The society is still true to its core values of devotion to business and family. It has supported a number of other women empowerment programs such as education and computer literacy for girls in India. In the late nineties, then President of Uganda learnt from the success of Lijjat to promote a similar institution in Uganda.
