Biryani is a popular mouth watering main course dish in India. There are many variations of Biryani such as Mughlai Biryani, Hyderabadi Biryani, Lucknowi Biryani, and so on. In fact every region has its own variation of the Biryani. The Biryani is famous not only among Indians but also among people from all over the world. It’s easy to find a delicious Biryani at any Indian restaurant across the globe. However, many people love to cook it at home as the ingredients are commonly found in Indian grocery stores all around the world. In India, Biryani is a part of most family celebrations and parties. And for some people, Sundays are not complete without a Biryani lunch.

Biryani Spices

For best results, preparations start the previous day where the meat is marinated with yogurt, salt, turmeric and red chilli powder which makes the meat turn out tender and juicy. Ghee, which is also known as clarified butter can be substituted for oil while frying onions to increase flavor in the recipe. The unique blend of spices such as bay leaf, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and coriander powder give Biryani a distinctive fragrance and taste. An authentic Biryani recipe calls for good quality Basmati rice, which is typically long grained rice. In the traditional method of preparing Biryani, rice and meat are placed in layers and garnished with caramelized onions and fresh coriander and chopped mint leaves. Milk infused with saffron is drizzled on the top of the rice with the option of adding yellow and orange food colors making the Biryani look even more attractive and colorful.

Although the process of cooking Biryani with spices is fairly simple, you can opt to use the Biryani Masala Powder in case you do not have all the spices handy. For some people the long cooking time may seem daunting and irksome but it’s all worth it in the end. Indians enjoy Biryani with a bowl of raita and a simple tomato and cucumber salad. Vegetarians use veggies like cauliflower, carrots, beans, green peas and potatoes instead of meat and you also have the option of egg Biryani for people who love eggs.
