Benne Murukku, also known as "Butter Murukku" or "Butter Chakli," is a popular South Indian snack made primarily from rice flour and butter. The name "Benne" means butter in Kannada, a language spoken in the Indian state of Karnataka, where this snack is particularly popular.
Benne Murukku is known for its crispy and light texture, with a slightly buttery flavor. The dough is typically prepared by mixing rice flour with butter (or ghee), along with other ingredients like cumin seeds, sesame seeds, asafoetida, and salt. Some recipes may also include chickpea flour (besan) or urad dal flour for added texture.
The dough is then shaped into spirals or coils using a special mold or a piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle. These spirals are deep-fried until they turn golden brown and crisp. Benne Murukku is enjoyed as a snack during festivals, celebrations, or simply as a tea-time treat.
