Description

Karva Chauth is a popular festival among Hindu womenfolk, especially in the Northern part of India. This one-day ritual is celebrated 4 days after full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. Such is the significance of this immensely popular festival that every married woman, irrespective of her age, celebrates Karva Chauth for good health and longevity of her husband. This immensely popular festival commemorates the beautiful bond that husband and wife share.

Thanks to Hindi movies and TV shows, Karva Chauth has gained huge popularity worldwide and today even young unmarried girls perform the rituals of Karva Chauth. In fact in modern times, many men have started participating in the Karva Chauth rituals equally with their wives.

Fasting is the most important ritual associated with this festival. Women observe a full-day fast which starts with the sunrise and ends only after women offer Arghya (water) to the moon. Most women don’t drink even a sip of water until moonrise. In some parts of India, women wake up at the crack of dawn and eat sargi, a special meal dished out by their mother-in-laws. It is a token of gratitude shown by mother-in-laws to their daughter-in-laws for fasting for good health and prosperity of their sons. After eating sargi married women stay without food and water until moonrise.

Women dress up in their finest clothes, wear makeup, jewellery and apply mehndi (henna) on their palms. A beautiful pooja thali for Karva Chauth is decorated with shimmering cloth and delicacies like sweets, dry fruits, kheer and matthi arranged on it.

In the evening all the ladies of the household gather together and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati for marital bliss and their husband's longevity. Narrating the story of Karva Chauth Mahatamya is one of the important rituals of this festival. After chanting the holy hymns women wait for the moon rise. At moon rise, women light diyas on thali, chant mantras while offering prayers to the moon. Women offer Arghya (water) to the moon through Karva (earthern pots) filled with milk, water and coins. Women see moon through a round shaped sieve and see their husbands through the same sieve.

The Karva Chauth fast is broken when husbands offer the first sip of water and morsel of food to their wives. This is followed by a sumptuous feast and celebrations. Husbands shower their wives with beautiful gifts and jewellery to mark the end of this beautiful festival of love, purity and devotion.
